DAVIE, Fla. -- The Miami Dolphins made a late trade with the Minnesota Vikings on Friday night in the third round. The team traded up and selected former Rutgers wide receiver Leonte Carroo. The Dolphins gave up a sixth-round pick this year and third- and fourth-round picks in 2017.
Here are some initial thoughts on Miami’s second third-round pick of the night:
My take: The Dolphins did not necessarily need a wide receiver, especially to the point of trading up in the third round. This is their one position that is deep with young talent, led by Jarvis Landry, DeVante Parker and Kenny Stills. Miami had bigger needs to address, such as guard and linebacker, but the team believes it took the best available player.
Trade machines: Miami vice president Mike Tannenbaum has a lengthy history of trades. He made his biggest trade of the offseason in the first round to swap the No. 8 and No. 13 picks with the Philadelphia Eagles and gained veteran cornerback Byron Maxwell and linebacker Kiko Alonso.
Interesting comparisons: Carroo said Marvin Harrison and Anquan Boldin are his two comparison players. He has the ability to play inside and outside on offense and adds toughness. General manager Chris Grier called Carroo another “alpha personality” and said the receiver group will be very competitive this year.
What’s next: The Dolphins will try to make an impact in Day 3 of the draft. They have just three picks Saturday, including a fifth-round pick and two seventh-rounders.
