Sebastian Vettel says Ferrari has found roughly a second in lap time this season and is going into the last two races of the season hoping for victories.

Vettel joined Ferrari at the start of the year following its worst position in the constructors' standings for five years. The team made a significant step over the winter with its power unit and Vettel believes it has closed on world champions Mercedes by another second since then.

Despite a double DNF at the last race in Mexico, Vettel said Ferrari is still closing on Mercedes for pure pace.

"The last race was the worst of the season in terms of results, but even so, in Mexico our race pace was encouraging," he said. "Let's bear in mind that eight to nine months ago, we were around 1.3, 1.4 seconds off the pace, whereas now its down to half a second or even less.

"I promise the fans that in the next two races, we will give it all we've got. The ideal would be if we're out ahead of everyone."

Despite scoring just four points in the last three races, Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen said his approach at the final two races does not need to change.

"Obviously the results have been pretty bad in the last three races," he said. "But we know where we are, more or less, and we just have to do a better job with no mistakes.

"I don't think we're going to do anything differently to what we have been doing so far. We've been doing a good job as a team and going in the right direction, so there's no point to change anything in the last two races that are left.

"We're going to do our maximum and finish as well as we can and then put all of the effort through the winter into preparing for next year."
