British and Irish Lions: Who would get into the Test team on current form?

In 12 months' time the British and Irish Lions will be preparing for the first Test on their tour of New Zealand. But who would line up in the famous red jersey on current form? Based on what we've seen over the past couple of months, here's ESPN's Test team to face the All Blacks.

Props

Despite the absence of Joe Marler, a prop who has so impressed Eddie Jones, England's scrum has got the better of their Australian counterparts with Mako Vunipola and Dan Cole key figures in this area of dominance. Ireland's Jack McGrath will also fancy his chances of getting a spot on the plane to New Zealand as will Wales' Samson Lee. A potential bolter in the front-row? How about England's Ellis Genge. He is highly rated by Richard Cockerill, a man who knows his front-row onions, and is expected to be capped sooner rather than later.

Starting props: Vunipola and Cole

Hooker

There is one candidate at hooker, currently ahead of the chasing pack and that's Dylan Hartley. He has been at the heartbeat of England's resurgence under Jones, has toed the disciplinary tightrope and is in the form of his life. He will be pushed close by Rory Best and Ken Owens next summer but he's the in-form No.2 at present. England's Jamie George may also be part of the travelling party.

Starting hooker: Hartley

Locks

There are numerous options here. Wales boast the brilliant, ageless Alun Wyn Jones while England have Maro Itoje, George Kruis, Joe Launchbury and Courtney Lawes at their disposal. Ireland's Ultan Dillane is improving by the game and should tour as should the wonderfully versatile Iain Henderson and Devin Toner will also be there or there abouts. Scotlamd's Gray brothers will also be targeting a spot in the Lions party but a combination of Itoje and Jones is a potent cocktail of second-row power.

Starting locks: Itoje and Jones

Flankers

Ireland's Peter O'Mahony and Sean O'Brien are currently sidelined but if they get good game time under their belts then they should tour. Ireland's CJ Stander will also be in the mix as will Wales duo Sam Warburton and Justin Tipuric. Out of the England lot, the two flankers that started against the Wallabies on Saturday - Chris Robshaw and James Haskell - are also likely to be in the frame at flanker.

Starting flankers: Haskell and Warburton

No. 8

This looks set to be a battle between Taulupe Faletau and Billy Vunipola. Jamie Heaslip will also be in the mix but Faletau and Vunipola are likely to be the two vying for the starting berth. Starting Faletau and then bringing on Vunipola could be a great option.

Starting No. 8: Faletau

Scrum-half

The starting scrum-half could be any one of five: England's Danny Care and Ben Youngs, Wales' Rhys Webb, Scotland's Greig Laidlaw and Ireland's Conor Murray. At present, the Welsh No.9 Webb is probably just ahead of the chasing pack.

Starting scrum-half: Webb

Fly-half

Any of George Ford, Owen Farrell, Jonathan Sexton and Dan Biggar will hope to start for the Lions but at present, Farrell is probably ahead of the rest. Though he has been playing at No.12 for England, he is probably the standout No.10 in the British Isles at the moment but a fit Sexton will have something to say about that.

Starting fly-half: Farrell

Centres

This is a fiercely competitive position. Jonathan Davies and Jamie Roberts won Lions Test caps in 2013 and a fit Manu Tuilagi will be in the mix. Then there is Jonathan Joseph and Wales' Scott Williams. Ireland's Robbie Henshaw could be a great foil to Joseph while Scotland's Alex Dunbar and Mark Bennett could also come into contention. A partnership of Joseph and Henshaw could cause all sorts of trouble.

Starting centres: Henshaw and Joseph

Outside backs

You could pick any make up as many as eight backs and still not come close to the final three that will start against the Kiwis. Scotland's Tommy Seymour and Stuart Hogg are playing well as is Wales' Liam Williams. Then there's the fit again Leigh Halfpenny and the currently injured George North. The England trio that started against Australia will also be in the mix.

Starting back three: North, Watson, Hogg
