Davies joins Llanelli

Llanelli have signed Wales centre Leigh Davies from Zurich Premiership side Bristol.

The 24-year-old former Neath and Cardiff player is returning to Wales having made 14 appearances for Bristol during his six months in England.

``This is a fresh start for me and I am determined to make a success of myself with Llanelli,'' said Davies, who has 19 caps. ``Things didn't work out for me in Bristol but Llanelli are a proven top club and I want to put myself back in contention for Wales.''

Llanelli's chief executive Stuart Gallacher said: ``We tried to sign Leigh last summer and we have pursued him for a month or so. It's a two-and-a-half-year contract that will run to May 31, 2003.

Leigh was capped at Welsh Schools, Youth, Under-21 and A levels before making his Five Nations Championship debut while still a teenager. His last cap came in the 33-19 victory over Canada in August, 1999.

``I wanted to play back in Wales to enhance my international credentials,'' said Davies. ``It is one of my goals and hopefully I will fulfil it.

``I was not very settled at Bristol, I was travelling back and forth. But now I am back in Wales, I have a great opportunity and I am looking forward to making the most of it.''

Davies will have to wait to don the Scarlets jersey until next month because he is ineligible to play in this season's Heineken Cup having played for Bristol in the European Shield earlier in the season.

Early on Friday Bristol announced that they had released Davies, as both parties felt that his career would be better served by a move back to Wales.

There was speculation that he was due to join Bridgend, but he was unveiled by the Scarlets at a press conference on Friday afternoon.
