The Washington Commanders will release placekicker Jake Moody, a source confirmed, giving the job to an undrafted rookie free agent. The move is expected to become official Tuesday morning.
Moody had struggled with his consistency in training camp -- missing four of six in one recent practice on attempts between 44 and 55 yards -- and booted a 29-yard attempt off the right upright that fell over the crossbar in Friday's 20-7 preseason win over Miami.
Meanwhile, rookie Drew Stevens has been more consistent. Three of his five misses in training camp occurred in one day, and he made a 41-yarder down the middle vs. the Dolphins.
Stevens was considered to have the stronger leg. He made eight of 13 field goal attempts from beyond 50 yards in his last two seasons at Iowa.
San Francisco released Moody last season after he missed two of his three field goal tries in the opener. But he went on to make 18 of 20 for Chicago and Washington combined.
The 49ers selected Moody in the third round of the 2023 draft. He had been named the Lou Groza Award winner 2021 as the nation's best college kicker. Moody made 84% of his field goal tries as a rookie, but that rate plummeted to 70.6% in his second season.
Washington also plans to sign running back Craig Reynolds, a source said. Running back Jeremy McNichols will miss at least a couple of weeks with a quad injury, according to coach Dan Quinn.
