Over the years, Milan CEO Adriano Galliani has been known for his exceptional work in the transfer market, particularly in obtaining great deals for the club.
In more recent times, he has been heavily criticised as the standard of his targets has dropped, but he could be on the cusp of his greatest achievement yet.
The initial reaction to the suggestion that Carlo Ancelotti could return this summer was dismissive, but then his sacking by Real Madrid on Tuesday opened the door a little further.
While the Italian tactician has suggested he is likely to take a year off given that he needs surgery on a troublesome back problem, Galliani has insisted that he is not giving up hope of bringing him home.
Milan's CEO has been in Madrid for the past few days and has had two dinners with Ancelotti to discuss his future and the possibility of coming back to the Rossoneri.
The pair are scheduled to have another meeting on Wednesday with a definitive answer expected by Friday, with Galliani now finally admitting that he is in Madrid to "bring Ancelotti back to Milan."
Aside from complimenting the former Madrid coach's cooking, Galliani even joked that he would accompany him and his wife on their holiday to Vancouver in a bid to convince him to become Milan coach for a second time.
With Silvio Berlusconi also on board with the plan, it is now clear who the priority is and it is an exciting time for Milan supporters as they await news on whether or not the club is going to make their best decision in some time.
Nevertheless, there are those that argue a return is never successful and history certainly supports their theory as we have seen them fail on multiple occasions.
However, this can and will be different. The Rossoneri need an experienced and proven winner as coach and one that has earned the respect of his players immediately. They need someone who can attract top names to the club again.
Ancelotti's work across Europe has ensured that players know what they can expect from him and that will undoubtedly play a huge role this summer if the reported transfer funds are made available to
According to Corriere della Sera, even if investment isn't secured this summer, Ancelotti will receive significant funds in order to rebuild the squad as ultimately Berlusconi and Galliani trust him to bring in the right players and get the best out of them.
Contrasting reports claim that Unai Emery and Antonio Conte are still in the running and represent a 'Plan B' for Milan should their attempts at convincing their former coach to return fail.
However, at this stage all their efforts should be directed at Ancelotti while providing him with the foundations and resources that he will need to turn the club around and make them a force in Italy again initially and then in Europe.
It still seems as though there is a great deal standing in the way of it coming to fruition, but from this point onwards it is reassuring to know that Milan are trying their utmost to make the best decision possible for the club rather than make the same mistake over and over again.
Yet the question remains -- is Ancelotti the solution to the club's troubles? We will soon find out.
