McLaren boss Zak Brown believes Formula One needs to create a contingency plan following the cancellation of second practice for the Chinese Grand Prix, to avoid similar scenarios in future.
Poor weather conditions in Shanghai disrupted the opening practice session on Friday, with drivers only able to complete a handful of laps, while second practice was eventually abandoned after fog caused visibility issues which meant the circuit's medical helicopter was unable to operate.
When asked how he felt about the lack of running on Friday, Brown replied: "Not good at all, terrible. Now in saying that, any other sport that's outdoors, we've seen Wimbledon... we've seen that cancelled, moved etc, so it happens. I think what we need moving forward is a plan of when this happens -- a contingency.
"Should we be opening up the paddock and letting the fans in? Obviously everyone had to be on standby during practice because we didn't know until they said we're not doing it. So I think we need a contingency plan. I think that's the best we can do, we can't change the weather."
Lewis Hamilton kept fans entertained towards the end of the second session by crossing the track and heading over to the main grandstand -- a journey he captured on his phone -- before throwing signed caps into the crowd. The Mercedes driver also called for a "switch-up" to the weekend format in the wake of Friday practice in China.
Brown feels F1 needs to do more to look after its fans and insists both fan and safety aspects need to be considered going forwards.
"Obviously we saw Lewis running around and Fernando was playing around in the garage, trying to provide some entertainment for the fans," Brown said. "I think in this new era there's a real collaboration between the teams and the rights holders, so I think at the end of the day it's our collective responsibility to take care of the fans. I think this is something to add to the list.
"What can we do to entertain the fans more, certainly those here and then also those [watching] on television. At the end of the day everyone is here expecting a show, so we need to put on a show. At the same time is there a different way to get the rescue situation sorted. I think it's all of the above."
