Kevin Magnussen gets five-second penalty, drops to 12th

Kevin Magnussen has dropped one position to 12th in the U.S. Grand Prix result after being handed a post-race penalty for a late move on Daniil Kvyat.

A late stop for the super-soft tyre saw Magnussen pass teammate Jolyon Palmer late in the race, before catching and attempting to pass Kvyat at the end of the backstraight. Magnussen went around the outside of the Toro Rosso driver and had to use the run-off area to complete the overtake.

The move was investigated after the race and the stewards deemed Magnussen to have gained an advantage, handing him a five-second time penalty which dropped him back behind Kvyat.

"Car 20 left the track in turn 12, gaining a lasting advantage," the stewards' decision read.

Speaking after the race but before the verdict was handed down, Magnussen had defended his driving, saying Kvyat forced him wide.

"I don't think I should [be penalised] because I braked on the outside much later than him, on nearly-new super-soft, and he was on 30-lap old mediums. Then he just released his brakes and tried to come back on me in the corner, there's no way he was going to stop his car, there wasn't going to be room for two guys, I could see that.

"I know he's on medium and he knows I'm on super-soft, I'm on the limit of what I can brake so of course he's not going to be able to stop his car better. Hopefully they look at it like that otherwise it's not right."

Magnussen was also awarded two penalty points, bringing his total to four for the 12-month period.
