Pirelli to test more robust tyres at Spa

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium -- Pirelli will give each driver two extra sets of prototype tyres to use during Friday practice for the Belgian Grand Prix this weekend.

The additional unmarked tyres will be added to the usual allocation of 13 for the grand prix weekend, but will only be available for use on Friday only. According to Pirelli, the prototype is designed "to even further protect the tyre from possible consequences generated by accidental multiple impacts on kerbs or other external bodies"

Pirelli suffered two high-speed tyre failures at Spa-Francorchamps last year, which were traced to debris cutting the surface of the tyre. Since the failures last year, the FIA has enforced Pirelli's tyre pressure prescriptions at each round to ensure the teams are running the rubber within the Italian tyre manufacturer's recommendations.

Friday practice gets underway at Spa at 10:00 local time on Friday morning.
