Nico Rosberg admitted he just could not pull a quicker lap out of the bag after narrowly missing out on pole position to Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton in Canada.
Rosberg was edged out by just 0.062s in the pair's opening runs in Q2 but neither could improve on their final lap. The German driver had finished ahead of Hamilton in FP3, a session which saw Mercedes drop off the pace, but could not find an advantage when it counted in Q3.
Asked if his lap had been ruined by a big lock up at Turn 1, Rosberg said: "I was hoping you hadn't seen that one, but apparently it was shown on TV! The first lap in Q3 was good, not quite enough to beat Lewis but still a good lap.
"On the next lap I tried to pull one out of the bag and it didn't work out, so that's it. It was second place but the team has shown again that it is the fastest and has the fastest car out there. For tomorrow everything is possible and the weather forecast is all over the place."
Statistically pole position is of least importance in Canada, with a 35 percent conversion rate since 2000, and Rosberg is using that as motivation for the grand prix.
"For now I'm just thinking about now because I missed out on pole and it was very close. But for sure tomorrow everything is possible and I know that. I'll give it everything but pole would have been better today for sure. I'll still try to go for the win tomorrow."
