The FIA has confirmed Renault spent three engine tokens on its engine upgrade ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix.
Kevin Magnussen's Renault and Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull are both running the upgraded internal combustion engine while team-mates Jolyon Palmer and Max Verstappen will have to wait until Canada to run the upgrade. Both Red Bull and the works Renault team reported a significant step forward from the upgrade during the in-season test following the Spanish Grand Prix and Red Bull is hoping it will provide the extra power it needs to challenge Mercedes for more victories.
Each manufacturer is granted 35 tokens to spend on power unit upgrades over the course of the year and Renault spent just seven ahead of the start of the season. It spent another on a small upgrade in Bahrain before the big internal combustion engine this weekend. It has 21 tokens remaining -- the most of any team.
