Renault boss says F1 exit still an option

Davenport/Sutton

Renault chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn says there is still no clear decision on whether his company will remain in Formula One next year as it negotiates its split with Red Bull.

After nine years together Renault and Red Bull will not be partners next year, with the French car manufacturer closing on a deal to take over the Lotus F1 team as a works outfit. Ghosn said the deal is not yet done to return to the sport as a full-fledged constructor, with negotiations ongoing with both Lotus and Bernie Ecclestone.

"Our future is the subject of detailed analysis and renegotiating," Ghosn told Autocar. "We will either exit or run our own team. We don't have a clear decision yet.

"We are analysing what to do. We have been clear in saying 'don't count on us as a provider of engines'. It is clear that if you provide engines you aren't mentioned when you win and you are criticised when you have problems."

Ghosn criticised Red Bull for its attitude to poor results in the last two seasons.

"It is not a question of fair, it is a question of sportsmanship. A team should win and lose together. What has been said is a question of sportsmanship. Again I say, you should win and lose together."
