Max Verstappen has been handed a drive-through penalty and a further grid demotion for an unsafe release after the engine cover of his Toro Rosso came off during qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix.

Verstappen emerged from the garage with 19 seconds left of Q1 following an engine change, but had been sent out with a loose engine cover which tore off his STR10 at the start of Curva Grande. The stewards investigated the incident and after qualifying deemed it an unsafe release by the team.

As punishment, Verstappen will have to serve a drive-through penalty within the first three laps of tomorrow's race. He has also been handed a ten-place grid penalty after Renault broke FIA regulated seals on his engine, but will start from the back of the grid regardless because he did not set a time.
