Daniel Ricciardo surprised Renault is still struggling as much as it is

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo is surprised Renault is still having regular reliability issues now that it is well into its second year of developing its V6 turbo power unit.

Ricciardo will start Sunday's Italian Grand Prix from the back of the grid after being hit with a 50-place grid penalty following two engine changes, two turbocharger changes, two MGU-H changes and two MGU-K changes this weekend. The engine that was fitted ahead of Saturday morning lasted just seven laps before coming to a halt with a terminal failure that required another replacement for qualifying.

"It was brand new this morning and now it's finished," Ricciardo said. "They are creating the tombstone for it."

Ricciardo revealed that Red Bull's supply of engines has got perilously low this weekend.

"We are short on engines, there is literally no engines available. We have two more now, so if one more goes... I think they will have to start building more at the factory.

"I figured there was too much money going around F1 to run out of engines. I'd always been nice on equipment as well!

"I expected these problems last year, the new era... so to have it all this year with us and Honda, it is a bit of a surprise."

Ricciardo said Red Bull had to hope to get a good result at the next race in Singapore, but is not holding his breath for an upgrade from Renault.

"I think the short-term we have Singapore to look forward to, in terms of getting a good result, so let's see... I haven't heard too many updates on the future about specifications, so I won't be too optimistic.

"When we get it in the car, then I will start to ask more questions, but until then I will keep quiet and keep driving. I think that would be the best scenario now. This weekend we put the new engine in, but it was still the same specification and still unreliable."
