Kimi Raikkonen said his third place in qualifying at the Canadian Grand Prix is a step in the right direction for Ferrari, but he will not be happy until he is challenging for pole position.

It was Raikkonen's first top-three qualifying result this year and puts him in prime position to challenge the Mercedes in Sunday's race, but Raikkonen said there is still room for improvement.

"We are still not where we want to be, so there is a lot of work to be done as a team to be exactly where we want to be at the front," he said. "Being in third, you're not happy, but it's better than in the past. Let's just wait and see tomorrow because that's the main day.

"Obviously we have made our life much easier to be, at least, close to the front. We have to make a good start and then see how it pans out. Nobody has done very many long runs this weekend, so we will see tomorrow what happens. I think we are usually a bit stronger in the race so hopefully it will be the same story tomorrow and we will do our best."

Raikkonen said Ferrari's engine upgrade had delivered as expected this weekend, but was keen to stress it is not the only update on the car this weekend.

"The engine is what we expected, but there is a lot of work going on and it's not just on the engine, it's the rest of the car and everything. We are just trying to improve and it's another normal step and it looks as we expected, so that's the main thing."
