6.55pm: And with that, I'll sign off for the night, on behalf of Karthik and Thilak. Thanks for joining us throughout as ever, and we'll be back, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, first thing tomorrow.

"Very good feeling," Conway says in Sky's player zone. " I'll have some time to let that settle in. The job's not done but I'm very happy. I had a conversation with Kane a couple of days ago and asked him what it feels like to go on that honours board; the first thing he said to me was: now you're on it, boy. [An NZ debut] never came across my mind - just getting a Test debut and the chance to play at this level was not something I'd thought about. Very special feeling. [Being off strike for a long time] I'm pretty grateful for that - it gave me the opportunity to look at the ball from the non-striker's end and get the clues from Tommy Latham. It gave me a good chance. The biggest thing I've been working on is my mindset, keeping positive throughout. The last thing I want to do is be tentative.

"[Checked your messages?] Not yet, I'll probably keep that off for the rest of the Test match... [Lord's slope?] Funnily enough I've been lucky to grow up playing a lot of cricket at the Wanderers and the slope there was quite similar. I did have conversations with a lot of the guys about being nice and tight, picking a line and sticking with it, and trying not to overthink it. [Dukes?] Fortunately we've had some good preparation leading up to this Test, trying to work out how we're going to go about it. It's about trying to play as late as possible, letting the swing happen and then catching up with it. [Battle with Wood] It was a challenge because he was really digging it in. I didn't really realise that when he dug it in that short it was only going to be chest or head height. I was getting into positions that weren't ideal so I thought trust it and take it on, and stay positive. [Time to prepare?] Gary Stead gave me the nod two days ago. It was cool to prep for that and have a couple of days to get my mind around it. He gave me heaps of time to adjust. I've grown up batting No. 3 so not too much of a difference."

Stick around for some reaction from Conway shortly, and make sure to check out Alan Gardner's report from Lord's, which will appear here in due course.

6.32pm: Stumps on the first day at Lord's and it has unequivocally been Devon Conway's day. The highest-ever score by a Test debutant at this ground, and he gets a round of applause from the England players and the dregs of the crowd on his way back into the pavilion. Superb innings: he's not even a regular opener, but saw off the new ball after NZ opted to bat first, and changed gears nicely, shifting up and down in tempo as the situation required. He had a couple of sketchy moments when Wood targeted him with the short ball but grew in confidence against it, and will resume tomorrow with 136 runs to his name. He found support from Henry Nicholls, who gritted it out for his 46, while England's all-seam attack toiled hard without too much reward. Two wickets for Ollie Robinson on debut, and one for James Anderson who continued his fine head-to-head record against Kane Williamson.
