Arteta: Arsenal ready to challenge for historic back-to-back PL titles (1:19)

The 2026-27 Premier League season kicks off with defending champions Arsenal taking on newly-promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium on Friday.

Mikel Arteta's side have won their opening day fixture in each of the last four seasons, and will be keen on getting their title defence started on a winning note. They set the tone with a 3-0 demolition of Manchester City to win the FA Community Shield.

Coventry romped to the EFL Championship title last season, finishing 11 points ahead of Ipswich in second place, while also being the top-scorers (97 goals) and boasting of the best defence (45 goals conceded). They've notched up impressive wins over Espanyol and AS Monaco in pre-season, on the back of heavy investment in the transfer market.

Here's everything you need to know about the match.

Leboeuf: Nobody will compete with Arsenal in the Premier League

Any doubts about Arsenal's readiness for the season were dispelled in their 3-0 dismantling of Man City in the Community Shield as Arteta's side won their first silverware of the season. The injuries to William Saliba and Jurriën Timber were glossed over with ease, while Christos Tzolis tempered the pain of missing out on Vinicius Jr. and the departure of Leandro Trossard with two assists against City.

Arteta's side didn't even need their usual set-piece prowess to bring up the victory, with Martin Ødegaard key in a fluid, expansive performance from Arsenal that threw down the gauntlet to their title rivals. While the Community Shield has rarely been a predictor of the season (only one of the last 15 winners have gone on to win the PL title), the ease with which new signings Bruno Guimarães and Tzolis bedded in to Arteta's system looks ominous.

Arsenal have a few gaps (right-back, left-wing) to correct in the transfer market, but with almost all of their title rivals fielding new managers or having a transitional year, they start as favourites to defend their crown. A fixture against Coventry will be a proper test of their hunger, but given the options available to Arteta off the bench, an opening day victory looks the likely outcome.

Lampard's Coventry cannot be underestimated

Coventry have been quite the juggernaut under Frank Lampard, as they eased to the Championship title last season. Their goal-scoring prowess married to a water-tight defence in many ways mirrored Arsenal, and Lampard will look to beat Arteta for the first time in five meetings come Friday.

The Englishman has been backed in the transfer market by his club, who have reportedly spent approximately £100m in bringing in seven players so far -- Aurele Amenda, Loum Tchaouna, Frank Onyeka (loan made permanent), Carl Rushworth, Caleb Yirenkyi, Gustavo Hamer and Taiwo Awoniyi. The club are also close to a £21m deal for Sidiki Cherif, with Lampard attempting to bring in Josh Acheampong and Mykhailo Mudryk from Chelsea as well.

Whether the influx of new players will cause issues for Lampard's settled side is yet to be known, but in the likes of Awoniyi and Ghana pair Brandon Thomas-Asante and Caleb Yirenkyi (who impressed at the World Cup), Coventry boast of enough quality to cause an opening day upset.

What do the numbers say?

  • At 25 years and 94 days, Coventry's gap since their last Premier League match in 2001 is the longest in the competition's history.

  • Mikel Arteta could become only the fifth manager to win 150 Premier League games within 250 games if Arsenal defeat Coventry or Aston Villa, joining Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp, Jose Mourinho and Sir Alex Ferguson.

  • Arteta has a 4-1-1 record against Frank Lampard as manager, with his only loss coming in the first meeting between the pair in December 2019 (1-2 vs Chelsea).

  • Arsenal have won all three of their matchweek 1 games as reigning PL champions.

  • The last time Arsenal and Coventry faced off on the opening day, it was a home loss for the North London side (0-3 in 1993-94). Coventry went on to do the double over Arsenal that season.

  • Arsenal have won 17 of their last 18 games against newly-promoted teams in the PL - the only exception being a 2-2 draw against Sunderland last season.
