Inter Milan regained the Serie A title with three games to spare after beating head coach Cristian Chivu's former club Parma 2-0 at the San Siro.

Inter only had to avoid defeat to seal their third Scudetto in six years having finished runners-up to Napoli last season and goals from Marcus Thuram and Henrikh Mkhitaryan kept them on course for a domestic double.

Chivu, who left Parma last June to replace Simone Inzaghi as Inter boss, has also guided the Nerazzurri to the Coppa Italia final, where they will face Lazio on May 13.

After Napoli were held 0-0 at Como on Saturday and AC Milan were beaten 2-0 at Sassuolo earlier on Sunday, Inter needed only a point to be crowned Italian champions for the 21st time.

Thuram and Denzel Dumfries both went close for Inter with early headers and Nicolò Barella crashed a shot against the crossbar before they took the lead in first-half stoppage time.

Piotr Zielinski's through-ball dissected the Parma defence and Thuram raced clear to bury his finish into the bottom corner.

Lautaro Martínez made just his second appearance since mid-February following a muscle injury off the bench in the 67th minute and he forced Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki into a fine save shortly afterwards.

Martínez then laid on his side's second goal for Mkhitaryan with 10 minutes remaining, the latter tapping home from close range.

Abdoulaye Ndiaye went close with a header for Parma in the closing stages, but it was too little, too late for the visitors, whose winless run against Inter was extended to 11 matches going back to 2018.
