Dallas v Minnesota
FC Dallas remains atop West with shutout of Minnesota United
Coming into Saturday's MLS game, host FC Dallas had only one loss at home while Minnesota United sported the worst mark in the league for road games at 1-10-1.
The statistics played out, as Dallas came away with an uneventful 2-0 win, ending a two-game losing streak. The win leaves Dallas on top of the table in the West.
Minnesota saw its playoff hopes grow more distant with the loss.
The start of the game was delayed over 2 hours due to lightning strikes in the area. At one point, local weather outlets reported over 2,200 lightning strikes within an eight-mile radius of the stadium in a 30-minute span.
Leading 1-0 at the half, Dallas put distance between the teams with a goal from Michael Barrios in the 57th minute. Barrios took a pass from Carlos Gruezo on the left side of the box and curved a shot into the back of the net.
Minnesota was without leading scorer Darwin Quintero, who didn't make the trip with an injury. Accounting for 10 goals and nine assists on the season, Quintero's absence was evident throughout the match as Minnesota never found much of a flow.
The first 45 minutes resembled what one would expect from a pair of teams that sat in the locker room for over 2 hours as neither team found any rhythm.
Dallas took a 1-0 lead late in the first half when Maynor Figueroa put the ball home off a Bobby Shuttleworth deflection on a save.
Dallas had a golden chance just 20 minutes into the game when Reggie Cannon slid in behind the Minnesota defense in the right side of the box, but Shuttleworth (seven saves) came flying off his lane to make the save and, at that point, keep the game scoreless.
