Inter Milan lost ground on Serie A league leaders Napoli ahead of the winter break as they lost 1-0 to Sassuolo.
A Diego Falcinelli strike in the 34th minute was enough to seal victory for the hosts against title hopefuls Inter.
The match also saw Paolo Cannavaro play for the final time before retirement and bid a fitting farewell to a career that has seen him play for Napoli and Parma.
Mauro Icardi had an opportunity to grab a point, but his penalty after the break was saved by Andrea Consigli and Inter remained in third place.
After starting the season unbeaten in their first 16 games Inter have now lost consecutive matches and sit five points behind Napoli.
