Georgia shuts out Texas in MCWS elimination game

No. 3 Georgia shut out No. 6 Texas 2-0 in a Men's College World Series elimination game Tuesday at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska, riding a dominant pitching performance and timely hitting.

Tre Phelps broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning with an RBI double.

Phelps finished 2-for-5 to lead the Georgia offense. Rylan Lujo drove in the team's other run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning. Ryan Black went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Brennan Hudson scored the first run after drawing a walk in the fifth. The Bulldogs' pitching staff was masterful, with starter Dylan Vigue striking out eight over four scoreless innings. Justin Byrd followed with five shutout innings of relief, giving up only two hits and striking out four to complete a shutout.

Texas, the designated home team, received a strong start from Luke Harrison, who struck out 11 and gave up only one run on two hits over 5⅔ innings. But the Longhorns' offense was stifled all night, managing only four singles. Aiden Robbins, Carson Tinney, Adrian Rodriguez and Casey Borba each had one hit for Texas. Reliever Sam Cozart was also effective, striking out six in 3⅓ innings.

The game was a classic pitcher's duel for the first four innings before Georgia broke through. In the top of the fifth, Hudson led off with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kolby Branch, and scored on Phelps' double to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Georgia added an insurance run in the seventh when Black singled and later scored on Lujo's sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

Up next: Georgia will face Oklahoma on Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET.
