      Harry Smith hat-trick helps Millwall to comfortable cup win

      Harry Smith netted a hat-trick for Millwall as they avoided an FA Cup upset by beating Braintree 5-2 to reach the third round.Strikes from Shane Ferguson and Aiden O'Brien added to Smith's treble but goals from Braintree's Michael Cheek and Jack Midson ensured it was not a straightforward victory for the hosts.Braintree took an unlikely lead after 16 minutes when Cheek barged through the defence and fired past Jordan Archer from 20 yards.But a minute later Millwall were level as Lee Gregory raced into the box to square for Smith, who gratefully poked home from six yards.Smith squeezed in a volley at the back post to grab his second before Ferguson drilled a low effort into the far corner in the 25th minute.The visitors pulled one back through Midson as he pounced on Byron Webster's slip and broke through to curl past Archer at the near post.But Smith completed his hat-trick with a tap-in before O'Brien scored late on to seal Millwall's progress.

        Braintree in seventh heaven after Eastbourne rout

        Braintree made history with a 7-0 hammering of National League South side Eastbourne to reach the FA Cup second round for the first time.The game was effectively wrapped up in a clinical opening 21 minutes from the Iron, who are currently 22nd in the National League.They took the lead after just six minutes when Monty Patterson scored as he followed up Michael Cheek's back-post header which was saved by Lewis Carey.The lead was doubled five minutes later as Patterson's corner was met by the head of former Wolves defender George Elokobi.The third goal came in the 21st minute when Oli Muldoon's free-kick took a deflection and the ball rolled into the net.Eastbourne attacked but struggled to find the target and Lee Barnard made it 4-0 in the 68th minute as he scored from close range after Sim Akinola's lob over Carey hit the post.Barnard bagged a second six minutes later from the penalty spot after Akinola was fouled, before Elokobi added the sixth after heading in another corner.The rout was completed by stand-in skipper Akinola as he curled home a beautiful effort late on.

          Pat Hoban scores twice to send Oxford through to FA Cup second round

          Pat Hoban scored twice as Sky Bet League Two side Oxford avoided an FA Cup shock by coming from behind to beat Braintree Town 3-1 in their first-round replay at the Kassam Stadium.The National League Premier outfit threatened an upset when they went in front with a 33rd-minute penalty. Joe Skarz brought down Michael Cheek, and Kenny Davis coolly rolled the spot-kick into the net, straight down the middle as keeper Benjamin Buchel dived right.But Oxford hit back in the blustery conditions and levelled on 42 minutes when George Baldock slipped a pass to Liam Sercombe, who sent an angled 15-yard shot past keeper Will Norris.Sercombe could easily have had a hat-trick because he fired two shots against the bar, and also miscued a volley in front of goal.Oxford forced most of the chances in the second half and they went ahead on 64 minutes with a beautifully-crafted goal, Kemar Roofe cutting the ball back and Hoban turning it in from close range.And Hoban made it 3-1 from the penalty spot on 80 minutes after Mitch Brundle flattened Callum O'Dowda.The replay then had its third penalty four minutes later when Chey Dunkley pushed Sean Marks - but this time Buchel saved Davis' spot-kick, which was again hit soft and straight.Oxford are now at home to Forest Green Rovers in the second round.

            Kenny Davis strike earns Braintree a replay against Oxford

            Braintree captain Kenny Davis bagged a second-half equaliser to earn the National League side a 1-1 FA Cup first-round draw at home to 10-man Oxford.Midfielder Davis struck midway through the second half to earn the Essex outfit a replay at the Kassam Stadium.Oxford - second in League Two - made an ideal start when striker Ryan Taylor opened the scoring after only 15 minutes.Callum O'Dowda picked out Taylor with a pinpoint cross and the former Portsmouth frontman nodded home from 12 yards.Davis levelled for the non-leaguers by firing a 63rd-minute right-footed shot beyond goalkeeper Will Norris from the edge of the Oxford penalty area.The visitors found themselves a man light 18 minutes from time when Johnny Mullins was shown a second yellow card for hauling down Michael Cheek.Chez Isaac almost compounded Oxford's misery but his long-range effort was kept out by goalkeeper Norris.Oxford striker Danny Hylton headed over in the 81st minute, seconds before Braintree were rescued by the post.Liam Sercombe drilled a shot goalwards from 12 yards but just as it looked like the midfielder has spared Oxford an unwanted replay, the ball struck the frame of the goal and bounced clear.

              Spireites hit six

              Eoin Doyle opened and closed the scoring in Chesterfield's 6-0 thrashing of non-league Braintree in the FA Cup first round.Doyle, Jay O'Shea and Sam Clucas each netted before the break to put the Spireites in control before Gary Roberts, a Remy Clerima own-goal and Doyle's second completed the rout.Doyle opened the scoring for Chesterfield after 21 minutes, turning home his 16th goal of the season after Clucas' effort was parried away by Nick Hamann.The League One outfit doubled their lead 10 minutes later, O'Shea swivelling inside the Braintree box to curl a fine shot into the top-right corner.And Clucas scored a tap-in after good work on the right by Tendayi Darikwa to make it 3-0 on the stroke of half-time.Roberts made it 4-0 after 53 minutes with a brilliant left-footed volley that left Hamann rooted to the spot.O'Shea had a neat finish chalked off for offside shortly afterwards, but it did become five when substitute Clerima inadvertently turned into his own net following a swift Chesterfield counter-attack.And Doyle got his second of the match in the final minute, firing home from the edge of the Braintree box to complete the scoring.
