Man United wrap up third in eventful win over Nottingham Forest

Bruno Fernandes equalled the Premier League assist record for a single season as Manchester United wrapped up third spot with Sunday's entertaining 3-2 victory against Nottingham Forest.

The 31-year-old has sparkled since turning down overtures from Saudi Arabia last summer, helping the Red Devils return to the Champions League and winning the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year award in the process.

Fernandes capped a wonderful campaign by setting up Bryan Mbeumo in Sunday's five-goal thriller as he equalled the Premier League record of 20 assists in a single campaign shared by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry.

It was a memorable final home game of the season for United, who celebrated the news Michael Carrick is set to stay on as head coach and Casemiro's career in his final Old Trafford appearance.

The Red Devils made a dream start when Luke Shaw scored his first goal since January 2023, only for Morato to head home a cross from summer target Elliot Anderson early in the second half.

United pulled back head immediately, but Forest fumed after referee Michael Salisbury deemed an Mbeumo handball in the build-up to Matheus Cunha's goal to be accidental after being sent to the pitchside monitor by the VAR.

Their mood would darken when Mbeumo turned in Fernandes' record-equalling cross, with captain Morgan Gibbs-White pulling one back superbly as Vitor Pereira's side pushed until the death.

Carrick addressed the crowd after a pulsating match that began with United taking a fifth-minute lead through an unlikely source.

Forest failed clear their lines and Shaw picked up a half-cleared cross before sending a low shot skidding into the bottom corner.

It was a rare moment of quality during a sluggish start that saw Casemiro and Carrick serenaded, with Fernandes denied from the edge of the box before United so nearly scored from a fine counter-attack.

Senne Lammens stopped seemingly offside Gibbs-White to begin a brilliant break that ended with Mbeumo hitting a post after rounding goalkeeper Matz Sels and the departing Casemiro prodding the follow-up just wide.

But it was far from one-way traffic, aided by some sloppy United play, and Nicolás Domínguez was all too easily able to go close with a header.

At the other end Amad Diallo stretched to nod narrowly over and continued to be involved after the break, with Mbeumo missing the target from his pass and then being shaken off by Anderson for Forest's 53rd-minute equaliser.

The England international sent over a fine right-footed cross that Morato headed home to the short-lived delight of the Forest faithful.

Just two minutes later Cunha stroked home in front of the Stretford End after Mbeumo brought down a cross and got away a blocked shot, but Forest claimed he handled.

VAR Matthew Donohue sent Salisbury to review the incident on the monitor, only for the referee to stick with his decision and award the goal after a lengthy review.

Forest fumed as play swung from end to end, with the brilliant Gibbs-White forcing a save before Fernandes fell to his knees, having superbly played in Mbeumo only to see the forward hammer off target.

The summer signing looked downbeat but finally found the net in the 76th minute, stabbing home a Fernandes cross as the Portuguese playmaker finally racked up his 20th assist. Lammens joined every United outfield player in celebrating with him.

The drama was not done there, though, as Gibbs-White pulled one back with a smart finish from another Anderson cross before an emotional Casemiro left to a standing ovation.

The intensity continued right until the end, with Diogo Dalot hitting a post and Joshua Zirkzee somehow failing to score in stoppage time as Sels stepped up superbly.
