Fiorentina beat Benfica 5-4 on penalties, Lezzerini save seals win

Fiorentina beat Benfica 5-4 on penalties after playing to a scoreless draw in their International Champions Cup match in Hartford, Connecticut.

Fiorentina goalkeeper Luca Lezzerini was the hero, saving Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez's fifth-round attempt to seal the victory for the Italian club.

Benfica finished the match with 10 players after Luisao picked up his second yellow card in the 66th minute in a match marred by bookings and hard fouls.

Scoring chances were at a premium, with Josip Ilicic's second-half strike off the crossbar being the closest chance either team had ahead of the penalty shootout.

New Fiorentina arrival Mario Suarez, who just completed his signing with the Serie A club Friday, came on in the second half and converted what ended up being the game-winning kick before Lezzerini's save sealed the deal for their club.

Benfica play the New York Red Bulls on Sunday, July 26, while Fiorentina's next ICC match is against Barcelona in Florence, Italy, on Aug. 8.
