England v Greece
Sensational Lionesses thump Greece 5-0 in World Cup playoff
England ran riot with four first-half goals as they secured a safe passage through to the final round of the Women's World Cup playoffs with a 5-0 victory over Greece at the King Power Stadium, winning 8-1 on aggregate.
The Lionesses saw plenty of chances come and go in the 3-1 win in Crete last week and Sarina Wiegman wanted her side to be more clinical in Leicester, where they duly obliged.
Alessia Russo got the scoring under way early before Lauren James scored a double, either side of Georgia Stanway's header, to have the tie wrapped up by the half-time whistle.
Promising talent Lexi Potter earned her first England cap following an impressive start to the season and she was denied a dream debut goal in the first period.
England showed their class and went on the hunt for more goals after the break, and Russo grabbed her second to finish the scoring and set up a meeting with Ukraine in the next round of the play-offs for a place at next year's tournament.
It took just three minutes for the Lionesses to breach the Greek defence when Russo latched on to James' perfectly weighted pass and expertly dispatched.
England doubled their lead after 16 minutes as Maya Le Tissier, who scored her first goal for England in the opening leg, this time turned creator for James who arrowed into the far corner.
Hannah Hampton did not have much to do throughout the contest but she was forced into making a save as she got down low to stop Eleni Saich from range.
Greece were simply unable to live with the hosts who were making light work of the second leg, scoring a third in the 34th minute as Lauren Hemp weaved her way into the box and picked out an unmarked Stanway who nodded home.
England were well and truly putting their opponents to the sword and they had a fourth when James ran onto Hemp's cross and buried first time from close range.
England saw goals disallowed either side of the break. Potter was denied a debut goal following a foul in the build-up by Stanway, who then had one disallowed three minutes after the break when a lengthy VAR check adjudged her to be in an offside position.
Greece held a second-half clean sheet until the 75th minute when England made it five, Walsh picking out Russo who rounded keeper Styliani Katergiannaki and slotted into an empty goal.
The Lionesses were showing no sign of letting up and almost had a sixth but Katergiannaki did well to deny Freya Godfrey one-on-one.
