Texas homers four times, Kavan shuts out Baylor to win Austin Regional
The Texas Longhorns homered four times, and Teagan Kavan threw a shutout to secure a 7-0 victory over the Baylor Bears on Sunday in the regional final at McCombs Field in Austin, Texas.
Kavan allowed three hits and issued no walks while striking out five. Katie Stewart went 2-for-2 with two home runs and three RBIs. Kayden Henry finished 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs and a stolen base. Reese Atwood contributed a solo home run, finishing 1-for-3 with a walk.
Brooklyn Carter, Amber Toven and pinch hitter Kaci West were the only Bears to record a hit, with West hitting a double in the sixth inning. Starting pitcher Peyton Tanner worked 5⅓ innings, surrendering six runs (four earned) on eight hits and four walks while giving up three home runs. Sadie Ross pitched the final 1⅔ innings, allowing one run on three hits, including a home run.
In the top of the first inning, Stewart launched a two-run homer to put the Longhorns up 2-0. They added another run in the second when Henry beat out an infield single to score Jaycie Nichols, making it 3-0. An error by Baylor in the fifth inning allowed another run to score, extending the lead to 4-0. The Longhorns broke the game open in the sixth inning with a trio of solo home runs from Henry, Stewart and Atwood.
