Via a dramatic penalty shootout, Africa's most successful football nation finally win a World Cup knockout tie, beating Australia at Dallas Stadium. Seven-time AFCON champions Egypt go through to the last 16. Following Salah's impudent Panenka, brave 18-year-old Herrington missed the Socceroos fourth spot-kick, before Abdelmaguid stepped up to win it 4-2. Really, Egypt should have got the job done within 120 minutes: Ashour gave them an early lead, soon after Volpato had clipped the crossbar for Australia, but Marmoush later missed a glaring chance to double their advantage. That proved costly, as Hany's second own-goal of the tournament got the Aussies back into the contest. Beach then made a superb stop to send the game to extra-time, during which Salah missed a good opportunity to wrap up victory without need for an agonising shootout. Despite Australia coach Popovic sending on captain Ryan to replace Beach, Egypt still scored all their penalties, and they'll go on to meet either reigning champions Argentina or rank outsiders Cape Verde in the next round. With an xG of 1.36 to Australia's modest 0.87, the Pharaohs probably deserve to progress, while the Socceroos must reflect on another near miss.
