Radamel Falcao saw a possible move back to Atletico Madrid fall through before the transfer deadline, sources have told ESPN FC.
Sources told ESPN FC on Monday that Chelsea and Atletico were working on a deal to cut short his season-long loan spell at Stamford Bridge to allow him to return to the Vicente Calderon.
Valencia were also credited with an interest in Falcao, who left Atletico for Monaco in 2013, but any move for the 29-year-old failed to materialise before Monday's 11 p.m. deadline.
Chelsea were willing to let Falcao end his loan spell from Monaco as he has struggled for form and fitness since joining the Blues last summer.
Falcao has made just one Premier League start for Chelsea and scored one goal in 11 appearances for the club.
The Colombia international has not featured since the end of October with a thigh problem and it appears he does not figure in Guus Hiddink's plans with Alexandre Pato's arrival pushing him further down the pecking order.
