Mike Trout found out in the dugout that his outfield assist was thrown 98.6 mph, which is probably his hardest ever. He started bragging about it immediately. "He came *quick* and let me know that," Angels RF Kole Calhoun said.

Mike Trout on his home run, which reached the Loge deck: "I just thought it was pretty cool that it was 454 again. For Tyler. A lot of guys said that as soon as I hit it. Obviously he's still watching over us. We're playing for him."

Kiké Hernandez came up with a base hit to right field with the tying run in scoring position, but Kole Calhoun threw out Cody Bellinger with a laser throw home, sealing a 5-4 victory for the Angels, who are 11-6 this month.

The Dodgers strung together three singles and two walks off Justin Anderson and Ty Buttrey in the sixth to trim their deficit from 3 to 1. They would've tied it if not for a nice play by Albert Pujols to field a hard grounder and record the out at home.

Giants have now won 17 of their last 20 games. The last time SF had a single-season stretch of 20 games with a 17-3 record or better was July 25-August 16, 2001 (17-3).

Pablo Sandoval told me that because he can't pronounce his last name, he calls Mike Yastrzemski "Glass-of-whiskey", which Yas loves. Buster Posey said Sandoval is one of the guys that's responsible for keeping the clubhouse loose and energized this season. Coming into today, Yastrzemski, grandson of Carl Yastrzemski, is batting .395, with 4 HR and 10 RBI over his past 9 games.

Mike Trout's biggest improvements have come with his throwing arm. The Dodgers' third-base coach, Dino Ebel, spent years working on that with Trout when he served on the Angels' staff. He still waved Max Muncy home, and watched him get thrown out with a 98.6 mph, 261-foot throw.

Cubs lefty Cole Hamels (oblique) threw 35 pitches in a rehab start for Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday as he went 2.1 shutout innings, giving up a hit and 3 walks while striking out 2. He'll throw a bullpen session on Thursday and then the Cubs will determine his next step. If all goes well a return to the big league team shouldn't be far off.

Trea Turner has hit for the cycle against the Rockies. It's his second career cycle against them. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he's the third player in MLB history with multiple cycles against the same team. Fred Clark and Christian Yelich are the others.

The Dodgers have had 10 different lineups in 11 second-half games. Here's what Dave Roberts said when asked about his plans to establish a set lineup against lefties and righties before the playoffs: "It's more understanding that anything can happen tomorrow, tonight, or in a month as far as injury and performance. I think right now it's too early to run eight guys out there versus right, versus left. We've got a big stretch coming up here after this Thursday off day. To be able to mix and match guys, keep them fresh, relevant, current, I think there's more value in that. And now, when you get into September, that's more the question for me."

Shohei Ohtani threw another bullpen today, still only fastballs. He has navigated through the rehab process without a hitch, but says he'll feel doubt about how it will all play out until he pitches in his first regular-season game. "But for now," Ohtani said, "everything has gone very smooth."

Saints DT Sheldon Rankins will start training camp on the physically-unable-to-perform list, as expected, while he recovers from his torn Achilles. Rankins can be taken off the list at any time if he is healthy and ready to practice. But he will only be eligible for the regular-season PUP list if he remains sidelined throughout all of training camp and the preseason.
