Jose Mourinho: CSKA Moscow didn't expect Manchester United 'attitude'

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said his team "surprised" CSKA Moscow in the first half to set up a 4-1 win in the Champions League.

United were 3-0 up after just 26 minutes in Russia thanks to two goals from Romelu Lukaku and a penalty from Anthony Martial. Henrikh Mkhitaryan added a fourth in the second half.

Mourinho told BT Sport: "We started so strong. I think we surprised them with our attitude and we killed the game. They didn't look as good as they are, but because of us.

"For me the important thing is two matches and six points and a good position in the Champions League. Four more matches to play but we start really strong and we are almost there."

Lukaku and Martial were the standout players in a dominant first-half display -- Lukaku scoring his ninth and 10th goals of the season with Martial supplying both.

The only downside for Mourinho was an injury to Martial -- who also got his fifth goal of the campaign -- which forced the Frenchman off after 72 minutes.

Mourinho added: "[Lukaku] is having a great record. We know that he's a very good player, he can score a lot of goals and playing in a team surrounded by quality players, even easier to do that.

"I have to admit that he is scoring really important goals and almost every game.

"The game adapted to [Martial's] qualities, the way we played adapted to his qualities, too. He had lots of freedom, lots of support and lots of quality around him and I am happy.

"His contribution was good and it was a pity he could not play for 90 minutes because I was ready to let him on the pitch for the whole game."

Mourinho admitted his team had "relaxed" in the second half before Konstantin Kuchaev got a consolation goal for CSKA in injury time.

United next face Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Saturday and Mourinho revealed there is a chance Marouane Fellaini could return after missing the trip to Russia with an ankle injury.

Mourinho added: "We relaxed a little bit [in the second half]. It's normal and we have a game on Saturday. Liverpool are luckier than us, they play Tuesday and Sunday, we have to play Wednesday and Saturday at 3 p.m.

"Carrick has no chance, Jones, I have many doubts and Fellaini, I have a hope but just a hope."
