Seeing Arsenal go through a crisis is nothing new. It tends to happen once or twice every season, and is often accompanied by a deluge of overreaction from fans and pundits.
This latest crisis is different, though. The numbers don't lie: this really is the worst Arsenal have ever been under Arsene Wenger. Here's a look at the stats that prove it.
Win percentage
Arsenal's win percentage in the Premier League was already the lowest its ever been under Wenger even before Sunday's 2-1 loss at Brighton. That latest defeat means Arsenal only have 13 wins in 29 games, or 44.8 percent. Since Wenger's debut season in 1996-97, the Gunners have never failed to win at least half their league games. In that year, he took charge eight games into the season and won 14 of the remaining 30, a ratio of 46.7 percent.
League position
Finishing fifth in the Premier League last season was a new low for Wenger, who had previously never failed to qualify for the Champions League until that year. This year, they may struggle to hold on to sixth place. London rivals Chelsea remain eight points ahead in fifth despite two straight losses, while seventh-place Burnley are only five points behind.
Points total
Of course, the league position can be slightly misleading in terms of how bad the season really was. Wenger has often pointed out that his team racked up 75 points last year, which would have been enough for a top-four spot in any other Premier League season. There won't be any of those excuses this time, though. Arsenal have 45 points after 29 games, which leaves them 22 points shy of Wenger's worst ever total -- 67 points in 2005-06, the year they lost the Champions League final. That means they need at least seven wins and two draws in their last nine games in order to beat that low-water mark. And that kind of run looks unlikely to say the least.
Goals allowed
There's a slim chance Arsenal can still avoid a new record in this category, but you wouldn't bet on it based on their form. Arsenal have conceded 41 goals so far. The most ever under Wenger: 49, in 2011-12. But this defence is leaking goals at a rate that makes it hard to imagine them conceding fewer than one per game for the rest of the season. Especially when you consider the next category.
Longest streak without a clean sheet
It's been 11 games since Arsenal last kept a clean sheet in the league. That's their worst run in 16 years, since February 2002. It has also kept Petr Cech on 199 Premier League sheets since December, still waiting for his 200th.
Consecutive losses
The loss to Brighton was Arsenal's fourth in a row in all competitions, following the North London derby defeat to Tottenham and consecutive 3-0 hammerings at the hands of Manchester City. Wenger said after the game that it's the first time that's happened in his career, but that's not correct. He also suffered the same fate nearly 16 years ago, in October 2002. And AC Milan would love to make it a record fifth straight at the San Siro on Thursday.
