Tottenham's attempted move for Barcelona's Andre Gomes was scuppered at the last moment after the Catalan club decided not to sell.
Spurs had looked set to beat West Ham to the Barca midfielder, according to sources close to Tottenham, but the deal fell through late on Thursday night.
Earlier this week, ESPN FC revealed that West Ham were trying to sign Gomes on loan, but Tottenham had hoped to get there first.
Spurs were in talks with Barcelona over a loan deal with a view to a permanent move after cooling their interest in Everton midfielder Ross Barkley, who was involved in a move to Chelsea that broke down at the last minute on Thursday as well.
They had been leading the chase for Barkley all summer, but an injury to the England international and Everton's £35 million asking price made them rethink.
Barcelona had been thought to be willing to listen to offers for Gomes, with the Spaniard reportedly not factoring into manager Ernesto Valverde's plans.
