Ola Kamara scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season and D.C. United defeated the New York Red Bulls 1-0 on Sunday night for their first-ever win over one of their oldest rivals at Audi Field.
Julian Gressel created the turnover and provided the assist leading to Kamara's goal, which finally got United a victory against the Red Bulls in D.C. in a fifth attempt since the stadium opened in 2018.
New York had won three of the previous four meetings in D.C. This was the 82nd all-time league meeting between the two founding MLS members.
The Red Bulls were held scoreless for the first time in four matches and sank to a first defeat in five games. United kept its first clean sheet in five matches, and held New York without a shot in the first half.
The Red Bulls finished with 60 percent of the possession but D.C. doubled them in shots and efforts on target.
Gressel and Kamara combined in the 27th minute to give D.C. the lead. After defender Amro Tarek took a poorly weighted pass in his own half, Gressel pressed and forced a turnover to create a breakaway.
Kamara reacted quickly and was there to receive Gressel's square ball and drive a low, one-time finish past Carlos Coronel.
United's halftime lead could've been larger with better finishing.
Gressel found Kamara wide open again after his goal on a nearly identical situation later in the first half, but Kamara took an extra touch that allowed Tarek to dispossess the forward.
Then in the 40th minute, Gressel found Drew Skundrich on the back post only for Skundrich to send his header directly to Coronel.
