Mevlut Erding will cost Stoke £6m

Stoke City boss Mark Hughes will have to pay £6 million to persuade Rennes to allow striker Mevlut Erding to move to the Britannia Stadium before the close of the summer transfer window.

Sources close to the Turkey international are aware of the Hughes’ interest in him, with the Stoke boss eager to add more striking options to his squad before September 2.

The Potters have thus far been unsuccessful in their attempts to persuade Bundesliga side Hannover to part with former Manchester United striker Mame Biram Diouf, so Hughes has turned his attention to Erding.

Stoke sent scouts to watch Turkey's midweek international with Ghana, in which Erding appeared as a late substitute and it is understood the club have made tentative enquiries to Rennes.

Erding only arrived at Rennes a year ago in a deal worth €8 million. He scored 13 goals last season and was also on target in last week’s Ligue 1 opener against Stade Reims. Rennes are under no financial pressure to sell Erding and any deal would require Stoke to at least match the fee paid to PSG last summer.

Hannover were demanding a similar fee for Diouf, which forced Stoke to end their interest because of the more frugal approach of chairman Peter Coates on transfer spending this summer.

Stoke are also still exploring the prospect of luring Junior Hoilett from Queens Park Rangers as they look to add more variety and pace to their attacking options.

Hughes assistant Mark Bowen confirmed the search will continue for the right players until the transfer deadline, saying: "If we can bring one or two new faces in, maybe in forward areas, it pushes the ones who are here already to raise their game and also gets supporters excited.

"We'll keep looking before the transfer window closes and hopefully we can add to the squad. Mark Cartwright, our technical director, is on board as well. It's a case of all of us scouring Europe and the home countries as well to address the parts of the squad that we feel needs strengthening."
