Ronaldo 400 - 366 Messi, PSG's first in 13, Benzema's record 528 -- the best stats from the weekend

play
Moreno: Barca have no width, everything is down the middle (1:30)

Ale Moreno gives his take on Barcelona's recent lack of goals after their 1-0 win vs. Levante. (1:30)

Cristiano Ronaldo has hit 400, Lionel Messi has hit 600 -- but more on both later. The Manchester clubs sleepwalking to a goalless draw set the tone as the traditional 'big six' of the Premier League all failed to register wins. Real Madrid put on a statement performance to beat Atletico Madrid. Juventus and Barcelona both won. Bayern Munich didn't. Borussia Dortmund lost 5-1 at home to Stuttgart, and that saw the end of the Lucien Favre era. Oh, and PSG lost to Lyon. The league leaders in Europe's top 5 leagues right now are -- Real Sociedad, Tottenham Hotspur, Bayer Leverkusen, AC Milan and Lille.

Quite the fun weekend, then. And here are the best numbers from all the action --

Premier League

1

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's own goal that gave Burnley their win was the first time Arsenal have conceded via a set-piece this season. They are now the 20th and final team to do so.

1

Sheffield United are only the fourth side in English Football League history to have no more than one point from their opening 12 league games of a season -- after Manchester United in 1930-31, New Brighton in 1931-32 and Newport County in 1970-71.

3

Manchester United's home struggles continue. They have failed to score in three home league games this season, one more than in the whole of the 2019-20 campaign at Old Trafford.

6

This is the first weekend since Jan 12-13, 2016 that none of the PL's "Big 6" clubs have won their respective games.

6

Granit Xhaka's was the sixth red card Arsenal have received in the PL since Mikel Arteta took over Arsenal in December 2019. That is double that of any other side in this time. All of them have been straight reds.

10

Arsenal's tally of 10 goals after 12 league games is their lowest at this stage of a top-flight season since 1981-82 (8 goals).

12

Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min are now one short of a long-time PL record. They have combined for 12 goals in the PL this season - only Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton in 1994-95 had more in a single season (13).

15

Harry Kane is the third player within the top five European leagues this season to reach the 15 goal mark in all competitions, after only Erling Haaland (17) and Robert Lewandowski (16).

La Liga

1

Atletico Madrid have lost a La Liga game for the first time since February 2020 [which also happened to be against Real Madrid (1-0)], ending a run of 26 league games without a defeat, their longest unbeaten run in the competition's history (GP26 W17 D9).

4

Real Madrid's second, a Dani Carvajal rocket that smashed off the bar onto Jan Oblak and into the net was Atletico Madrid's 4th own goal since the start of last season, the most in La Liga. The only teams with more over that stretch among Europe's top five leagues are Sampdoria (5) and Sassuolo (5).

This means over 10% of the goals Atletico have allowed in La Liga over the last two seasons have been own goals (4 of 31 total).

7

Zinedine Zidane is unbeaten in his 7 seven La Liga games against Atletico Madrid (Wins 3 Draws 4), the best run of any Real Madrid manager in a derby against them since Luis Molowny, 7 games between March 1974 and February 1986 (Wins 5 Draws 2).

528

Karim Benzema now has the most appearances for Real Madrid by a non-Spanish player in all competitions (528), surpassing Roberto Carlos (527).

Serie A

0

Quirky stat of the day -- none of the current Verona players were born on the day they last beat Lazio away in Serie A. In December 1984. They beat Lazio 1-2 on Sunday.

0.79

Among players with more than three away games played in Serie A in the three-points-for-a-win era, Inter's Romelu Lukaku has scored the most on average per game. He has 19 goals in 24 games on the road at 0.79 gpg.

1

Thanks to Theo Hernandez's 91st minute equaliser, AC Milan are the only side unbeaten in Europe's top 5 leagues since the restart after the first continent-wide lockdown in March-April). They are now on a 23-game unbeaten streak in Serie A (18-0-5 W-L-D).

5

AS Roma were in the mood on Sunday. They beat Bologna 5-1, with all their goals coming in the first half. This is just the third time in their history that they have scored 5 or more in the first half of a league game -- after Livorno in May 1931 and Padova in July 1930.

Ligue 1

1

Paris had just one shot on target against Lyon, their lowest tally in a Ligue 1 home game since the beginning of the Qatar Sports Investments era (2011/12).

3

Lyon have 3 different players with 5+ league goals this season (Toko Ekambi, Memphis Depay, Tino Kadewere), more than any side in the Top 5 European leagues in 2020/21. Kadewere's goal was the difference between PSG and Lyon on Sunday.

4

PSG have now lost 4 of their 14 league games this season -- their highest number of defeats at this stage since the 2009/10 season (also 4). That season PSG finished 13th.

13

This was PSG's first Ligue 1 defeat at home against Lyon in 13 years. That was the year (2007-08) Lyon won the last of their 7 straight Ligue 1 titles.

Messi-Ronaldo watch

Lionel Messi scored. Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice. As you were.

16

Messi has attempted more direct free-kicks than any other player in the top five European leagues this season, failing to score with his 16 attempts.

30

Ronaldo has now scored 30 league goals in 2020. That is the most by any player among Europe's top 5 leagues. Of course it is.

400

Now this is quite the record. Ronaldo has become the first player to reach 400 wins in the top-5 European League in the 2000s. Messi is second with 366 wins, Gianluigi Buffon third with 350.

600

Messi's goal on Sunday was his 600th for Barcelona wearing their number '10' . He has also scored 9 goals in all competitions wearing jersey number 30 and 33 goals as jersey number 19.
