Pirelli unveils 25-percent thicker tyre for F1 season

YAS MARINA, Abu Dhabi --Pirelli has unveiled its full range of tyre compounds for the 2017 season.

Next year's sweeping regulation change sees thicker rubber and wider cars, which is all part of a new package aimed at achieving faster and more aggressive-looking cars. The hope is to achieve a five-second drop in lap times, though that statistic has been cast into doubt by some of the paddock's leading names.

Pirelli will stick to the same compounds at this year, the hard, medium, soft, super-soft and the ultra-soft tyre, which was released ahead of the current season. The tyres are 25 percent thicker than the current compounds.

The tyres were unveiled in the Yas Marina paddock ahead of the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Next week, Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes will all take part in the final days of testing for the new compounds.
