2K has added to its non-simulation football video game agreement with the NFL by announcing a separate partnership with the NFL Players Association.
In March, 2K signed a multiyear agreement with the NFL for the creation of football games involving NFL teams and trademarks. Under the agreement, 2K will be able to put the numbers, names, images and likenesses of over 2,000 NFL players in their respective team jerseys on the pixelated field.
"2K has a proven track record of high-profile and successful business relationships with other sports leagues, professional athletes and their collective fans," Steve Scebelo, interim president of NFL Players Inc., the marketing and licensing arm of the NFLPA, said in a press release. "The label makes some of the best sports video games in the world, and we look forward to working with 2K, our players and OneTeam on future projects."
2K noted multiple games are currently in early stages of development and that specific titles, developers and release dates will be announced in the future.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. 2K did not comment on whether the agreement will include former NFL players and likenesses.
The deal 2K signed with the NFL was for non-simulation football experiences; this would include mobile games, arcade-style non-realistic games, and more generally, any video game that does not feel like and function like an authentic NFL football game experience. The simulation football game contract belongs to EA Sports, highlighted by its "Madden" franchise. In May, EA Sports and the NFL extended their agreement until 2026 for simulation football video games.
