Most significant move: Going with undrafted rookie Kyle Brindza at kicker is a leap of faith. The Bucs let veterans Patrick Murray and Connor Barth go after they struggled with accuracy in the preseason. The Bucs traded for Brindza last week and he came in and earned the job by making field goals from 57 and 55 yards in the preseason finale against Miami. Brindza also can handle kickoff duties. Brindza has a big leg and the performance in Miami was very impressive but he needs to show he can kick when it really matters.
Mixed results from the draft: The Bucs probably are going to start four rookies on opening day -- quarterback Jameis Winston, tackle Donovan Smith, guard Ali Marpet and middle linebacker Kwon Alexander. But you can’t label this draft class as a complete success. Wide receiver Kenny Bell will spend the season on injured reserve and receiver/return man Kaelin Clay and fullback Joey Iosefa were waived. Clay was the most disappointing of the bunch. The Bucs drafted Clay to handle kickoff and punt returns, but he struggled throughout the preseason. The upside to the moves with Bell and Clay is that undrafted rookies Adam Humphries and Rannell Hall made the team as backup wide receivers and may end up handling return duties.
What’s next: The Bucs are far from having their final roster in place. As a result of their 2-14 record last season, they hold the No. 1 waiver claim. It’s likely the team will add several players that were waived elsewhere. The defensive line obviously will get some help off the waiver wire because the team currently only has three defensive ends on the roster. The offensive line also could be a prime area to target because there isn’t much depth on the current roster. One other note, cornerback Tim Jennings agreed to terms with the Bucs on Thursday night. He still hasn’t signed his contract. Once he does, the Bucs will have to clear another roster spot.
Buccaneers’ moves: Released K Connor Barth, DL Da'Quan Bowers, LB Larry Dean and DE Lawrence Sidbury. Waived CB Jude Adjei-Barimah, WR Kaelin Clay, T Edawn Coughman, DE Ryan Delaire, CB Brandon Dixon, WR Donteea Dye, CB Isaiah Frey, OL Garrett Gilkey, LB Khaseem Greene, S Chris Hackett, LB Josh Keyes, WR Tavarres King, QB Seth Lobato, DT Caushaud Lyons, K Patrick Murray and OL Patrick Omameh. The Bucs also placed DE Larry English and WR Kenny Bell on injured reserve.
