Dolphins claim quarterback Logan Thomas

The Miami Dolphins claimed former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Logan Thomas off waivers Sunday, the team announced.

Thomas was released by the Cardinals this weekend after the team traded for former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Matt Barkley. Thomas was a fourth-round pick by Arizona in 2014. He’s thrown just nine passes, and completed one, in his NFL career.

This is the first time since 2013 that Miami enters the season with three quarterbacks. Starter Ryan Tannehill has made 48 consecutive starts and appears primed for a big season, and Matt Moore has been a solid No. 2 option.

The Dolphins were looking to see if former first-round pick Josh Freeman or McLeod Bethel-Thompson could develop into a third quarterback worth keeping this offseason. But neither player was consistent enough in training camp or the preseason.

To make room for the move, Miami put rookie running back Jay Ajayi on short-term injured reserve with the designation to return. Ajayi cannot return to play until the Week 9 game at the Buffalo Bills.
