Penn calls out Shields on Twitter

BJ Penn has laid down the gauntlet to Jake Shields after challenging the fighter on Twitter.

Penn has promised to contact UFC president Dana White to set up a fight between the two former champions.

Former Strikeforce champion Shields suffered his first defeat since 2004 in his title bout against Georges St. Pierre at UFC 129, and could now be set to face the two-weight UFC champion.

With Penn awaiting a rematch against Jon Fitch following their draw in February, and with Fitch recovering from surgery on a shoulder injury, Penn appears keen to arrange a crowd-drawer against Shields.

"I would never challenge one of Cesar Gracie's guys, but you've been calling me out for years. Let's do it! I'll contact Dana," Penn told Shields on Twitter.

Shields responded, saying: "I'm a BJ fan but let's get it on. Make the call. Let's go!"
