Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos will meet Stipe Miocic in the co-main event of UFC 173, which is scheduled for May 24 in Las Vegas.

The UFC's annual Memorial Day weekend event will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Las Vegas Review Journal first reported the heavyweight bout.

Dos Santos (16-3) won the UFC title in November 2011 in a first-round knockout over Cain Velasquez. Following one title defence against Frank Mir, Dos Santos lost the belt back to Velasquez via unanimous decision in December 2012.

In October, Dos Santos attempted to recapture the belt against Velasquez at UFC 166. He lost via TKO in the fifth round.

Last month, UFC president Dana White attempted to book a fight between Dos Santos and Alistair Overeem. Overeem (37-13) declined, citing a rib injury.

Miocic (11-1) is coming off back-to-back decision wins over Roy Nelson and Gabriel Gonzaga. The Ohio native is 5-1 in the UFC, with his only loss coming via TKO to Stefan Struve in September 2012.

A middleweight title fight between Chris Weidman and Lyoto Machida is scheduled to headline the UFC 173 pay-per-view.
