Thiago Alves and Yoshihiro Akiyama may well be on collision course for UFC 149, according to MMA Fighting.

Both men are coming off recent losses and the UFC's unofficial policy is to pair fighters in matching situations. According to the report, a July meeting is planned with UFC 149 the expected event to host the bout.

Alves is looking to rebuild his career in the welterweight division, having once been the No. 1 contender. He looked on course for a big victory in a recent battle with Martin Kampmann, but threw away the fight when a suicidal late takedown attempt allowed the Dane to snap on a guillotiine.

Akiyama was rather less impressive against Jake Shields, losing what was largely a stand-up battle against the Cesar Gracie fighter. Defeat would leave his future on extremely shaky ground.

Alves retweeted on Tuesday: "Thiago Alves vs Sexyama! Recipe for awesomeness!! Great fight UFC!!"
