Former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez has agreed to face Frank Mir at UFC 146, UFC president Dana White has confirmed.

With heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos making the first defence of his title against Alistair Overeem, another high-profile heavyweight bout has been added to the card, which takes place in Las Vegas on May 26.

Should Velasquez emerge triumphant from his battle against Mir, the American is likely to get another shot at the title, against the winner of the Dos Santos v Overeem bout.

"Verbal agreements are in for a No. 1 contender match between former UFC world heavyweight champions Frank Mir and Cain Velasquez at UFC 146 in Las Vegas," White told UFC.com.

Former Strikeforce heavyweight contender Antonio Silva is slated to face Roy Nelson.

Velasquez claimed the heavyweight title in October 2010 with a first-round TKO of Brock Lesnar. But he suffered a torn right rotator cuff in that bout and was sidelined for more than a year. Velasquez returned to action on November 12 against Dos Santos and was stopped in the first round. It was Velasquez's lone title defence.

Mir won the UFC interim heavyweight belt in December 2008 with a second-round TKO of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira before relinquishing the title to Lesnar during a unification bout in July 2009. Mir came up short in a second attempt at claiming the interim belt after he was knocked out in the first round against Shane Carwin at UFC 111 in March 2010.
