Israeli Shahar Peer joins top seed Elena Dementieva in the quarter-finals at the GDF Suez Open in Paris after a hard-fought victory over Karolina Sprem.
Despite four aces from the Croatian, the sixth seed broke her opponent's serve once in each set to win 6-4 6-3. She will now face Lucie Safarova who upset fourth seed Francesca Schiavone 7-5 6-2.
Dementieva's quarter-final opponent is something of a surprise after Andrea Petkovic beat No. 5 seed Aravane Rezai 6-3 3-6 6-3. Rezai created more break opportunities than her opponent, but Petkovic crucially capitalised on four of her 13 chances to send her French counterpart crashing out.
In the same half of the draw, Melanie Oudin flew out of the traps to stun Patty Schnyder, winning through 6-1 6-3 in just 65 minutes. The talented American needed only 28 minutes to race through a hugely one-sided first set that saw Schnyder surrender over half of the points on her own serve. Oudin was made to battle a little harder in the second set, but she did not have to save any break points en route to victory.
Oudin now faces Agnes Szavay, who beat Petra Martic 6-2 6-4 in her second round match.
Meanwhile at the PTT Pattaya Open in Thailand, Ekaterina Bychkova pulled off the shock of the second round, upsetting third seed Vera Dushevina. The world No.121, who reached the semi-finals in Pattaya City in 2008, enjoyed a convincing 6-4 6-1 victory over a player ranked more than 80 places higher than her.
She will now meet Kazakhstan's Sesil Karatantcheva in the quarter-finals, after she also pulled off a shock victory over eighth seed Julia Goerges on Wednesday. Austrian fifth seed Sybille Bammer recovered after losing the first set to beat Kai-Chen Chang 5-7 6-4 6-2 and set up a quarter-final meeting with top seedVera Zvonareva who beat Italy's Alberta Brianti 6-3 6-2.
