Top seeds safely progress at Flushing Meadows

John Isner, a former top American college player, beat this year's top American college player in the first round of the US Open.

The 13th-seeded Isner defeated Marcos Giron 7-6(5) 6-2 7-6(2) on Tuesday. Giron earned his first spot in a Grand Slam tournament when he won the NCAA title for UCLA in May.

The big-serving Isner didn't face a break point. He has shown that a player can compete in college then succeed in the pros after a successful career at Georgia from 2004-07. He's the only American man currently ranked in the top 40 in the world.

The 21-year-old Giron announced in July he was turning pro after his junior season.

Fourth seed David Ferrer endured few problems at the start of his US Open campaign, winning 6-1 6-2 2-6 6-2 against Damir Dzumhur.

Despite dropping just three games in the opening two sets, Ferrer slumped in the third only to establish control again in the fourth with a multitude of fine shots.

Richard Gasquet, the 12th seed, enjoyed a straight sets victory over Denis Istomin, while Giles Simon beat Radu Albot 6-3 6-4 6-2.

Fellow American Sam Querrey improved to 3-9 in five-set matches with a 6-2 4-6 6-4 4-6 6-3 win over Argentina's Maximo Gonzalez.

Tenth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan cruised to a 6-2 6-4 6-2 victory over American Wayne Odesnik, showing no apparent effects from a toe injury that hampered his preparations.

"I'm very happy," Nishikori told ATP.com. "I was playing really well, an almost perfect game. [There are a] couple of things I have to work on still, but I'm happy to win today. It's not easy the first match after injury. I know how important this tournament is, and so hopefully I can go farther this week."

Pablo Andujar got a free pass to the second round after opponent Jack Sock retired hurt. Fabio Fognini eased past Andrey Golubev 6-4 6-4 6-2.

Federico Delbonis beat Noah Rubin 6-4 6-3 6-0 , while elsewhere there were wins for 25th seed Ivo Karlovic and 28th seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Borna Coric beat 29th seed Lukas Rosol 6-4 6-1 6-2.
