Britain's James Ward is one match away from joining Andy Murray in the first round of the US Open after battling to a 6-4 6-4 victory against Vincent Millot.

Ward will meet Radu Albot in the final qualifying round on Friday hoping to progress into the main draw for the first time in his career.

He missed out last year after falling to Somdev Devvarman at the same stage but has now risen to a career-high ranking of 131.

British No.1 Murray faces a tough draw in a bid to win his second US Open title. He will open his account against Robin Haase in the first round but could meet Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals.
