British No.2 James Ward progressed to the second round of US Open qualifying though compatriots Dan Evans and Daniel Smethurst both bowed out.

Ward set up a meeting with Vincent Millot after seeing off Aldin Setkin 6-2 6-2.

However, Evans - who reached the third round of the main draw last year - and Smethurst both followed Dan Cox and Naomi Broady in exiting the qualifying draw.

Evans spurned a match point before eventually losing 4-6 7-6(9) 6-2 to Jimmy Wang, while Smethurst was beaten 6-1 6-2 by Konstantin Kravchuk in just 50 minutes.
