Sabine Lisicki smashes WTA's fastest ever serve

She may not have won, but Sabine Lisicki wrote herself into tennis history with the fastest ever recorded serve in a WTA match.

Lisicki fell to fifth seed Ana Ivanovic 7-6(2) 6-1 in the first-round match at the Stanford Classic but was happy with her 131mph effort.

The German fired the serve on game point at 5-5 in the first set, but failed to claim an ace as Ivanovic managed to get her racquet to the ball.

Lisicki is already known to have one of the fastest serves on the women's tour, and has picked up the nickname 'Boom Boom' as a result. Her latest effort surpasses the previous record of 129mph set by Venus Williams.

Ivanovic, who avenged her third-round defeat to Lisicki at Wimbledon, said: "It was a tough first match for both of us. She was playing very well. In the tie-break I thought I had to be aggressive, so I came to the net. I felt confident in doing that.

The Serb split with coach Nemanja Kontic after that defeat in SW19, and was playing her first match with Dejan Petrovic.

"My mentality has changed. Sometimes just a few points make a difference and it helps to be positive in a tight situation. I did that today in the tie-break."

On her reasons for firing Kontic, she added: "It was a lot of things on and off the court. He helped me a lot and sometimes these decisions are very hard."

Ivanovic next faces qualifier Carol Zhao, a student at Stanford who was leading Yanina Wickmayer 6-2 1-0 when the Belgian retired because of a viral infection.

Elsewhere, Australian Open finalist and defending champion Dominika Cibulkova fell 6-2 4-6 6-2 to Garbine Muguruza, while Monica Puig beat seventh-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro, 6-3 7-5.

Serena Williams opens her Stanford Classic assault on Wednesday - her first match since exiting Wimbledon in bizarre fashion.
