Juan Martin del Potro underwent surgery on his left wrist on Monday and will be sidelined for several months.

Former US Open champion Del Potro has suffered with the problem off and on for two years. He had surgery on his right wrist in 2010 and was out of action for eight months.

In a statement on his Facebook page, Del Potro wrote: "Obviously, it's not the easiest choice or the happiest moment of my career.

"I experienced a similar situation and I know how hard it is to be out of the tour, the desire to return, the endless weeks of recovery and how difficult it is to start fighting for the top spots in the rankings again."

After the operation, he added: "Still sore from the surgery. Luckily everything went well. Thank you very much for the nice messages you are sending me."

Del Potro withdrew from the Miami Masters on Wednesday before his first match. He has played only 10 matches this year.
