Serena Williams is set to play the Indian Wells tournament having vowed never to return in 2001.

Serena was set to meet sister Venus in the semi-finals 13 years ago, before Venus withdrew 20 minutes before the match. The pair were booed by the crowd, with Serena going on to win her second title there, before they said they would not be coming back again.

They have since skipped the last 12 events, with their father Richard saying that he heard racial slurs from the crowd during the final.

While Serena is not definitely confirmed for the tournament, she has put her name on the entry list. Venus' name was not included for the BNP Paribas Open from March 3-10.

Serena revealed last week at the Australian Open that she considered a return to Indian Wells after watching a film about the late former South African President Nelson Mandela, inspired by his message of reconciliation.
